LED Coke Bottle

AV Promotion’s touring LED Coke bottle presented an unusual challenge – a cylindrical assembly, 30 meters high, made from Barco Mistrip LED fixtures. While the central cylindrical high-resolution section, used to display video content, was simple to map, the other sections of the bottle had varying mistrip spacings (from 1:2 to 1:6), with pixel densities changing from the top to the bottom of each section.

To solve this problem, UVA created a custom cylindrical mapping within d3. This mapping compensated for the horizontal squeezing of content towards the narrower sections of the bottle by squeezing the content vertically by the same factor; thus ensuring preservation of aspect ratio. Finally, d3’s feed system allowed the compensated content to be formatted correctly for the LED processor.

The finished product, combining live video with still and moving graphical content, has been on tour across China throughout 2007, 2008 and 2009.
